Loblaws and John Lederer Rule Canadian Retail Market - For Now!
Loblaws and Loblaws Presdent John Lederer are ruling the Canadian retail world at this time. In a move that is sure to win approval on Toronto's Bay Street, Lederer is taking dead aim at the UFCW Union. Lederer is determined to cut his single biggest expense - wages - by converting Zehrs, Loblaws and Fortino stores into RCSS and No Frills stores and in doing so he'll either limit the effectiveness or completely break the union.
For those of you reading this, that currently work for Zehrs - well you don't. You are working for LCL (Loblaws Companies Limited). The executives at Zehrs are merely puppets on a string. (Ken Code, you should be ashamed) There is no Zehrs - only LCL. Forget about loyalty. Things are NOT the way they used to be. Things will NEVER be the way they used to be . . .
With four announced Zehrs store conversions to the No Frills banner, many jobs are at stake both now and in the immediate future. Sure there are those with enough senority to bump into other stores. But what happens to those that get bumped out the door? What happens in a few years when there are no Zehrs stores to bump into?
Yes, I can hear you saying, "But, we can still go to work at No Frills."
Sure you can. But at what cost?
Here is the offer to the part time employees, as I see it. (Feel free to write and correct me if I'm mistaken.)
A part time employee with 10 years senority will be offered 1.5 weeks pay for every year of service to a maximum of $10,000.00 If the employee is making $400.00 per week and actually has 10 years of service he would receive $400.00 x 1.5 x 10 = $6000.00 to transfer to the No Frills. After taxes and other deductions the employee would receive approximately $4,000.00. This is the good news.
Employees with 10 Years Service will Lose $6.69/Hour
Here is the bad news. The employee with 10 years service, who is likely at top rate of $15.19 per hour will slot in at the 2601 hourly rate at No Frills. According the the chart provided by the union, the hourly rate for employees at 2601 hours is the princely sum of $8.50 per hour. A drop of $15.19 - $8.50 = $6.69 per hour!
A 44% Wage Cut
So, we work for years to get to a decent wage rate and along come our pals at Loblaws and stab us in the back. While the cost of everything - housing, gas, cars, clothes and yes, Food - RISES, Loblaws wants to CUT our wages!
What is our union doing about this mess? What they usually do - not much. they have launched complaints with the Labour Relations Board. While the company has been planning this action for months if not years, it seems that our union president has been planning his retirement and our secretary-treasurer has been planning his next meal. If we lose these cases, we are in big trouble folks.

What kind of pay adjustment is John Lederer taking? After all, he is our leader isn't he? NOT REALLY. He thinks he is into all this leadership developement, yet he doesn't even know what it means. Ask everyone else to give back while a few at the top get more and more "executive compensation"!!!
Thanks for writing. I haven't been able to verify this yet, but the rumor is that he has given himself a 14% raise which brings him to almost $2.5 million/year. This is just his salary and does NOT allow for bonuses, stock options etc. Lets face it - John Lederer is just one prince of a guy!
Hi,
I'm working on a television story about supermarkets. I'd love to talk to some of you about this blog or about working in a supermarket. Just doing some research...so nothing is recorded. Hope to hear from you.
Thanks,

All the sister companies are moving into 1 building, this year (2005), to cut down costs so that they can compete with Wal-Mart. (The stores aren't the only ones getting screwed.) Loblaws would like some stores be changed to RCSS stores and if this would happen, then they won't be changed over to No Frills. The union won't doesn't want this to happen because they would loose money on union dues. Wouldn't it be better for the union to get some dues instead of none if the stores go No Frills??? If the stores go RCSS then the union still gets dues and most of the employees would retain their jobs. I have worked for Zehrs for many years and Zehrs sure isn't the way it used to be. This is supposed to be called "Progress".
Are you serious that they pay this much money to work in a grocery store. Quit your complaining and go back to school......
You think the workers are overpaid???
You should see how much they pay the clowns at the top of Loblaw Companies Limited to manage the company that runs these stores.
Buy the way, half the people who work at Zehrs probably have more education than the writer of the last post (who probable doesn't have a job).
damn good blog, check out mine http://juicyfruiter.blogspot.com, comments always welcome!
I just wanted to say that instead of putting the blame on Loblaws as a whole we should be putting the blame on ourselves. The reason why they HAVE to do this is so the company can still be one of the leading employers in Canada. Walmart is killing them so fast it's not even funny. So instead of pointing the finger you should be looking at yourself. Do you get sucked in to Walmart's low prices? Well then you are a contributor to your OWN wage loss!!!
Quit complaining and get an education! Try University grads who are working for minimum wage. Or better yet, I make barely what you do, working over 10 years in my field and I have 2 college diplomas, no overtime paid, no breaks (since I'm not a smoker)and daily and monthly obligations that are used by many facets of the organization...Whoopee, you ring through someone's grocery order and have to smile! Tough life!
Don't tell people to get an education as if your some great student. Two college diplomis are probably equal to the high school that others had 30 years ago by learning standards of the time.
I hope that later in your life some cocky little bastard like yourself tells you to get an education because he has 2 masters.
...I can understand what the non-loblaws people are saying-the part-time wages that LCL pays are above the industry standard and in some areas they are excellent.Consider that a good proportion are women-mothers who are trying to supplement their family income with a part time job.Others are people who simply cannot make ends meet without some sort of supplement. Not everyone can work the maximum hours allowable. They are not pulling in $400 per week as one of the commentators alluded to.The average wage is about $8-$10/hour.Only the old timers-people who have been working for the company for over 9 years will ever see $15/hour.Does the working class not expect hirer wages for those who have been loyally working for the same company for that long?Who thinks that it is actually a great job to stand all day and scan groceries. It's mind numbing-akin to warehouse work. You get one 15 minute break every 4 hours to sit down.mostly evenings and weekends. It sucks sometimes too.And somebody has to do it.In some of the loblaws stores the turnover rate is staggering and it is difficult to keep departments staffed. This is before the cut in pay.Enough said.
The problem faced by the employees of LCL are that, although we are working in the #1 grocery chain in the country, with record profits, share price, market share and expansion,we,the little people, are the ones who are being told are the barriers to true competition with Walmart. It is our wages, not the salaries of the top execs, that are excessive. It is us that are going to have to tighten our belts.
Consider this-as Walmart moves in an spreads its debilitating effect throughout the entire country-what industry will feel the pinch next.Loblaws wants its full time employees to take a cut in pay equal to almost 25%.could you afford that? Most can't.At this point there is really no reason to do it.They say they are acting to save our jobs in the future in case Walmart actually does squeeeze their market share-proactive they say.Do we really need to act so rashly in a proactive case?
Shop at Walmart they are the future and they are the biggest threat to those big suits. Give it another 2 years and they will all be out of commision. They spend way to much on stupidity like new store's renos and name changes. They should have left things the way they were cause they have ruined themselfs now. There running scared!!
ya gotta love the christmas price gouging.
when the big boys want more, middle class has to settle for less. no exceptions.

What is for sure is the Loblaw's is just fashioning itself like Walmart. Demanding more and more from the staff, while providing less and less pay/benefits. And the fat boys at the top take the cream when it comes to salaries.
Lee Scott from Walmart USA took home 17.5 million while the company cheated their employee's with low, low pay and benefits.
Walmart sucks. Loblaw is taking a page from this pathetic business model.

Maybe some of you should go work for WalMart see what they did for there people in New Orleans after Katrina, just left there employees and there families rotting on the streets with the dead bodies!!! They have not done a thing to there store severly damaged by the storm!!!! Loblaws isn't so bad I know from experience they would not do that!!!!
Wal-Mart is the worst company on the earth. Greed at the top. The Walton family is worth over 82 BILLION dollars privately, yet they cheat the low end workers.
Walmart sucks more than any other retailer.
Did you know that Loblaws give free rent to Good Life fitness clubs for a hole year then they cut our salaries!!!

I work for Zehrs and agree that Wal-Mart is a joke why does our gov't allow these companies to pursue the "American Dream" in our country I am not american and all we get is a loss of good paying jobs that boost our economy and for all those who say your saving money by shopping at Wal-Mart you better get saving because in the future yourselves and your children will only be able to afford the bare minimum when working for a garbage wage as provided by Wal-Mart this dosen't just affect us Loblaws employees but also everyone else looking for a compettitive wage even you college boy why do you think you make a low wage while "educated" because of dirt bag companies like Wal-Mart thats why so stop complaining about us being overpaid you eat too don't you?????
Derric, Frustrated Zehrs Employee
OK LOBLAWS IS AWESOME
SO THERE.
What happened to all the big wigs in Zehrs? They got cut lose!!!
Now the company is being run by x Wal-mart executives.
Talk about bad getting even worse.
Wal-mart....the lowest of low companies.
Fuck Walmart.
this is so true. I've seen it first hand, I've worked there for ten years. It's as if the Devil himself runs that place. At my store two people commited suicide because of the pressure. Another lady commited suicide at another store five years back because of my boss, She said so in the suicide letter. Rught now five managers are on stress leave. Loblaws sucks the soul out of you. DON'T SHOP THERE!!!!
Stop shopping at walmart , that would make the fight even.
I am getting tired of people always "BLAMING" Walmart for other companies going down. Quite honestly, the store and the way they had decided to run it was an ingenious idea that went out and did what every store sets out to do, to take peoples money. The fact that they have totally over ridden every other retail store is somthing I suppose that they should be proud of, wouldn't you be if it were you?
I had worked there for 5 years and was never treated poorly and for a job which required.... well not to much... I didn't think the pay was so bad for what I had to do. By the time I left I was at 12.45 an hr.
Whatever the problem is with Loblaws/zehrs maybe the employes should be looking at how to help there own company rather than looking for somthing to blame.
And by the way, I would shop Walmart any day compared to your stores, the prices are WAY to high for what food should be worth.
IF ANY OF YOU THOUGHT ABOUT GOING TO UNIVERSITY BUT THOUGHT IT WAS OUT OF REACH I HAVE ADVICE. aPPLY TO ANY UNIVERSITY AS A MATURE STUDENT. MAKE UP A STORY LIKE HOW YOU VOLUNTERRED AND STUFF (DONT WORRY THEY DONT CHECK REFERENCES) JUST DO THAT AND YOU WILL BE IN.
Walmart has shit products from all over China and the employee's don't give a rats ass about their job or the customer.
GROW YOUR OWN FOOD, AS MUCH AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN. A tomato plant and other veggies can easily fit in the corner of anyone's apartment or home.
Its so easy to blame walmart for profit loss at loblaws retail outlets, but let me tell you, i work at the Maple Grove Distribution center, the main feeder building for SW Ontario loblaw stores...
This is just one example of what is wrong with this company, i could write a book on the rest.
We throw out about 1.2 million worth of GOOD CLEAN FOOD every year, the janitors on our shifts (mostly high school dropouts, ex-convicts and untrained in their jobs) will throw out whole cases of good clean product because they are in the wrong location or in their way, They cant be bothered to take it to inventory control or think before they act... 100's of $$ worth of food, every day we fill our compactor TWICE, and it holds 16 tonnes!!!!!! We have told management that the janitors need proper training and they laugh, they think its a waste of money to train some guys on recouping product, yet they are solely responsible for 1.2 million $$ in inventory LOSS in our DC alone every year!!!
This doesn't count all the overstock product we throw out, or any of the the product we give to the local food-bank.
Furthermore, i don't know if anyone has noticed but Shoppers Drug Mart has managed to setup its own grocery shelf, you people might not think its is anything of consequence, but the other week i was in getting a prescription filled, and the old lady in-front of me was buying 84$ worth of groceries from Shoppers Drug Mart. So we really shouldn't be worried about just walmart cutting in on our business.
If you own stocks in loblaw, i suggest you find a more stable business to invest in. One that actually cares about the Country its in and the people who work for it.
Be smart with your investments. Giving to companies like loblaw just empowers them, it doesn't make them better.

This is a great post Dmitry. I just had one of the ‘Doh!’ moments and ran back to correct my own site before publishing my comment. You see my own comment form did not match what I’m about to advise. I get less comments than you, so never noticed any problem. I’ve changed it now anyway so here goes.
